Armodafinil vs Modafinil. What drug is better and what is the difference?
Armodafinil or Modafinil? Well, for a better understanding of this issue, we should tell you everything about these two medications. Let’s go.
As you probably already know, Modafinil is a nootropic, or the so-called “smart drug”. It’s a cognitive enhancer which is good for students (especially during the exam week), intellectual workers and actually for everyone who wants to increase his or her intelligence and improve the cognitive functions. Actually, this drug was created for treating excessive sleepiness and other sleep problems (like those related to the shifting work schedules), but now, despite the fact it’s really good as a wakefulness promoting agent, it’s much more popular as a study drug.
What’s good in Modafinil is that it doesn’t just improve your memory, concentration, motivation and give you energy boosts. All in all, there are plenty of other drugs that work like this. The main difference is that, unlike other nootropics, Modafinil is an extremely safe drug. You can use it for a long time, you can increase the dosage (within reasonable limits, like 400mg) and you will most likely have no problems with it. The side effects are very rare and “addictive” is not the word someone can say about Modafinil. It’s one of the best study drugs in the world, and taking its safety into account — the only best.
It’s not an old drug. Modafinil (originally Lafon) was first prescribed in 1994 (by the way, that’s why we can be sure there are no long-term effects, not like “we haven’t had enough time to see these effects). After 13 years, in 2007, Armodafinil was created.
So, let’s now compare Armodafinil vs Modafinil.
As we’ve just said, Armodafinil is a relatively new drug. Its mechanism of action, as well as chemical formula, is very similar to Modafinil, but there are a very few differences — thus, Modafinil has two different enantiomers (molecules that are the mirror images, also called optical isomers) (S- and R-enantiomers). We don’t know yet how exactly this medication works, but it’s a common thought that the S-enantiomers are completely useless. The big difference between Modafinil and Armodafinil is that the latter has only R-enantiomer, which is (as we think) useful for enhancing cognitive functions. But the question is that, without the full information about both of these drugs, we can’t confirm that some of Modafinil chemical compounds are useless and some are not. Moreover, it’s very unlikely that big pharmaceutical companies that produce Modafinil, Provigil and other brands of this drug would add an unnecessary chemical substance without a reason. Think about it and don’t be fooled!
The other major difference between Modafinil and Armodafinil is in dosage. Due to the fact that the latter is a newer drug, it’s formula, as they say, is improved. Whether it’s true or not, comparing Armodafinil vs Modafinil dosage we should say that Armodafinil usually requires a smaller dose, like 50mg instead of 100mg of Modafinil in the morning.
But the thing you should know is that Modafinil is still much cheaper. Would you rather spend $100-$200 or $500-600 for 100 tablets? We are sure the first offer is much better, but it’s up to you, of course. What else must be said is that such price of Armodafinil could have been reasonable if it was twice as strong as Modafinil. But unfortunately, one 150mg pill of Armodafinil works just as a 200mg pill of Modafinil, so the ratio is not 2:1, it’s more like 1.33:1. Not the most advantageous proportion.
Comparing Armodafinil vs Provigil, one shouldn’t forget about the effects. According to the reviews and feedbacks, Armodafinil effects last a little bit longer, but Modafinil is much more “gentle”. While the newer drug promotes more “clinical” wakefulness (like the users say), its competitor works “softer” and makes a patient feel uplifting and energized. What we can say here is that it’s one of the main functions of nootropics to make you awake, isn’t it? And this awakening should definitely be gentle, because you don’t just need your eyes being open but also your brain working sharp. Well, all in all it’s only your choice. But don’t forget that the effects of both of these medications aren’t similar for all the patients. Try and only after that you’ll understand how your system reacts to the drug.
Provigil is also better when it comes to motivation and focus (due to reviews, no clinical tests of these two drugs were done). When we are talking about better concentration, it’s one of the most common reasons for people to take smart drugs — and it was a surprise when we realized that Armodafinil isn’t very good at it. Again, it’s all from reviews and feedbacks — for a detailed information ask your doctor about it.
The last thing we’d like to tell you about is the side effects. Modafinil is known for its rare side effects and Armodafinil is good at it, too. The most common (but still very rare) effects are headache, pain in back/neck, dry mouth and eyes. One of the common Armodafinil side effects is depression, but let’s be honest — those who take Provigil have a chance to face this problem, too. So here we have a draw with no winner and no loser.
Talking about the long-term effects of these two smart drugs, we should mention that while Modafinil is known for more than 20 years, its competitor was first prescribed only in 2007. We know this drug less than 10 years, and here is a problem — while Provigil is the safest nootropic, Armodafinil is one of the most “unknown” nootropics. No clinical trials on the long-term effects were done, so we can’t say anything about it. The thing is, Modafinil was tested and researched, and, what’s more important, lots of reviews are the best proof of its safety. Getting back to its competitor, we couldn’t say the same. Maybe, in 10-20 years no problems will appear and it will be the next “the safest” nootropic, but now it’s not recommended to take it for a very long time.
Let’s make a conclusion. Armodafinil works for a little longer (~2 hours or so), and it’s 1.33 as potent as Provigil. Modafinil is much cheaper, very safe, good for those who want not just to wake up but to perform better from the early morning, and we know more about its long-term use. We think the choice is clear. And you?
