Let’s talk about taking Provigil and Adderall together. Is it worth it?
And at first let’s discuss briefly the information about Modafinil and Adderall. What is better if not mixing them?
So, Modafinil is a nootropic, and it’s really good. It improves memory, focus, gives motivation and energy boosts, it can improve your mood and, of course, increase wakefulness (it was originally designed for this purpose). The side effects of Modafinil (or Provigil, it’s a brand name so these words are actually synonyms) are very slight and rare — headache, dry mouth and eyes are the most common ones. By the way, they can be treated easily with one or two glasses of water, because Modafinil can cause dehydration, which is usually the main reason of such effects. It’s safe to take Modafinil for a long time, and it is very, very difficult to overdose with this medication. During the clinical trials, the volunteers took more than 5000mg of it, while the average daily dose is 100-200mg, and the worst effects were headache, pain in stomach and arrhythmia — and that’s all! We don’t say you should exceed your dose, of course, but it’s very relieving that the new generation of smart drugs is extremely safe even in such cases.
Unfortunately, we can’t say that Adderall is safe, too. The first thing that should be said in order to understand why it is worse than Provigil is its chemical structure.
In fact, Adderall is actually a mix of 4 amphetamine salts, it’s an amphetamine itself and it is the only active substance of this drug. Of course it’s good as a stimulant (both Modafinil and Adderall are good at it), because amphetamine is a pure stimulant of your brain and the central nervous system. But can we call amphetamine a “smart drug”?
Definitely, no. The amphetamine salts flood your brain with dopamine, a brain chemical, so you feel better and even more focused. The problem is that with Adderall you will most likely not be able to concentrate on the thing you have to do right now, so you can just lose time.
Comparing Adderall and Modafinil it’s necessary to talk about their side effects. As we’ve already wrote, you shouldn’t think about Provigil side effects because, well, it’s very statistically unlikely for you to have them. It’s not as good with Adderall. This medication has lots of side effects. Among them are:
- Stomach pain;
- Problems with speaking, etc.
But, as it’s actually amphetamine, the most serious side effects are tolerance, addiction and overdosing. Tolerance is actually a huge problem of those who take this medication. It can develop really fast, and you can become an addict to Adderall fast, too. Moreover, there are serious withdrawal effects of it, so very often, the only option for Adderall addicts is rehab. Is it worth it?
No, it isn’t. The thing is that taking Adderall in the 21st century is almost pointless. There are dozens of medications with better effects and without such side effects and tolerance possibility. Modafinil is one of them, and, maybe, the best one.
So, taking Provigil and Adderall together — what are the pros and cons?
The truth is that taking Provigil with Adderall doesn’t make any sense. Why?
Well, both Adderall and Modafinil are strong and effective stimulants. Both Provigil and Adderall are the drugs which can easily cope with sleep problems and make you awake and alert.
There were no clinical trials or researches on taking these two drugs together, so this opinion is based on chemistry, common sense, reviews and feedbacks.
Long story short, mixing Modafinil and Adderall will not give you the advantages of both drugs. You won’t have double energy, concentration and motivation boost; your memory won’t improve suddenly and you will not be able to be awake for 48 hours without any sleep, no.
The thing you will definitely get is the side effects. People who take low doses of Modafinil and Adderall together write that they had brain fog, dizziness and some other undesired side effects, especially when the effects of Modafinil and Adderall stack and peak at the same time. And, of course, you shouldn’t forget about the side effects of Adderall, because in such combination they are more likely to happen.
The other problem of taking Provigil and Adderall together is that, well, both of these drugs can influence your heart, liver and kidneys. Even if it’s not a huge problem for both of them taken alone, the mix can be dangerous. If you take them together, please, ask your doctor to monitor you and do it by yourself. Those with heart or liver problems shouldn’t mix these two together, and even if you are perfectly healthy, we still recommend you to talk to your doctor about taking these medications together.
All in all, we don’t recommend you to mix them. You have Modafinil, which is effective and very safe, and you have Adderall, which is also effective (but not as good as Provigil) but dangerous and addictive, so why should you do this? You can get the same effects only with Modafinil, without taking amphetamine salts. Think about it and ask your doctor, if you have any questions.
